After a stellar 2016 season, The Woodlands High School Varsity Football Team is preparing to improve upon last year's success after making it to the program's second state championship.

A record-setting and emotional season ended on a bittersweet note as the Highlanders fell to the Lake Travis Cavaliers 41-13 in the state championship game at AT&T Stadium.

This year's team, however, will build upon the success the program earned last season and several returning stars will look to lead the young Highlanders back to the big stage.

Wide receiver Kesean Carter, who recently won a state championship in the 4x400 relay, will be returning for his senior season after a historic junior campaign in which he racked up 1314 yards, 16 touchdowns and 70 receptions. Carter also has committed to Texas Tech to play football and run track.

On the other side of the ball, defensive back Ethan Bonner led the team with five interceptions last year. Bonner is also a state champion track athlete and was on the 4x400 relay team with Carter that took home the gold. The Stanford commit has a knack for picking off opposing quarterbacks and his ball-hawking abilities could provide crucial turnovers for this year's squad. But unfortunately injured his knee in 7on7 over the summer and is out for the 2017 season. The Highlanders have turned to Linebacker Jackson Sherear to lead the defense in Bonner's absence.

The Highlanders are led by Head Coach and Athletic Director, Mark Schmid, who has been coaching the team since 2004. Coach Schmid's son, Eric, former Highlander and current Sam Houston State Bearkat quarterback, led The Woodlands to its 2016 state championship game. Under center this year is Quinn Binney, the Army commit for lacrosse was injured in the Highlanders third week of the season, where Quinton Johnson took over for the Highlanders.

The Woodlands Highlanders have been playing varsity football since 1978. They made their first playoff appearance in 1981, which also marked the team's first district championship. The Woodlands won its first playoff game in 1982.

Recent League Championships include 5A Region II District 14 in 2013, tied for 1st 5A Region II District 14 in 2012, 5A Region II District 14 in 2010, 5A Region II District 14 in 2009 and 5A Region II District 15 in 2003. The program is proud to have produced long-time NFL receiver, Super Bowl champion and current New England Patriot, Danny Amendola, who was a member of the 2003 Highlander team that reached the state championship.
