Throw the Best Super Bowl Party
The date is set, the teams are in (New England Patriots vs. Atlanta Falcons, for those of you who don’t follow football very closely!) and now its time to PARTY! Even if you’re not a big NFL fan, the Super Bowl is one of those very American pseudo-holidays where people gather to eat, drink and be merry the first Sunday in February. Here are a few tips on how to throw the best big game party so you’ll have fun no matter what the game’s final score. • Make it a potluck. Most people have a specialty, some are great at appetizers, others desserts. Ask your guests to bring their favorite to share and you just provide a main course or heavy hors d’oeuvre. This makes it easier and less expensive for you, and you’ll all get to sample some delicious recipes. • Have a signature drink. Get a case of specialty beer from Boston (think Sam Adams or Harpoon) and another from Atlanta (SweetWater Brewing Company beers are available locally from Silver Eagle Distributors) and have guests pick teams based on their drink preference. Or, serve up a cocktail with a city’s theme, like: o Peachtree Margarita – 1 oz Peach Schnapps, 1 oz Tequila, 4 oz sweet and sour mix, 1/2 cup crushed ice. Blend well and serve in a margarita glass. o Boston Cooler – 2 or 3 oz rum, 1/4 oz simple syrup, 1/2 oz lemon juice, soda water or ginger ale. Shake first three ingredients with ice and pour into 12-oz collins glass. Fill with club soda or ginger ale, insert spiral of orange or lemon peel (or both) and dangle end over rim of glass. • Play Super Bowl Squares. Create a 10×10 grid and randomly enter the digits 0 through 9 across the top row and down the first column. Assign the horizontal axis to the Falcons and the vertical to the Patriots (or vice versa). Have your guests choose any square (or multiple squares) by signing their name inside that square. At the end of each quarter, match up the last digit in each team’s score to the corresponding square on the grid. The person who’s name appears there is the winner. (You can also have people buy squares and then each winner gets a portion of the pot!) You and your guests will “have a ball” at this year’s Super Bowl party! And don’t forget to watch all those great Super Bowl commercials!
