Protecting Your Eyes at Work

If you work in an environment that involves chemicals, debris and heavy machinery, your eyes are at risk for injury. But also, if your job involves sitting in an office staring at a computer for most of the day, there are potential hazards for an eye injury to occur as well. We all face risk for eye injuries at our jobs, no matter where we work, and must navigate through them to avoid damage.

Wear your safety eyeglasses, protective goggles, face masks or helmets when needed on the job. And remember, it only takes one time to not use them for an incident to occur. Thousands of workers in fields such as construction, plumbing, electrical and maintenance seek medical attention for eye injuries every day. Today’s safety glasses come in unique and fashionable styles, coatings, tints that are all available at Woodlands Eye Associates. All of our protective eyewear meets or exceeds OSHA standards.

Many of our working patients complain about dry eye in their offices. Pay attention to the ventilation system, overhead lighting and the amount of times you blink when staring at a computer. It sounds funny but the most common complaint from our patients who spend a lot of time at a computer is dry eye, and it could be that you are not blinking enough!

Abide by the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. And, as always, the best way to maintain good eyesight and eye health is to have a comprehensive eye exam every year. Undiagnosed issues can lead to accidents in the workplace.

Taking these extra steps can help protect your eyes from accidents that lead to emergencies. Make an appointment with Woodlands Eye Associates at either of our two convenient locations in The Woodlands.
