Never Say Never

How many times have you said, “I would never do that”? Or other common “I will never” statements, like “I would never let my child…”, “My child would never…” or, one we often hear in real estate, “We are never moving again!” Fortunately, that last one doesn’t prove to be true very often – I have moved some “I will never move again” clients over six times! Somehow, we continue to use this extreme language, and often, it turns out to be entirely untrue. Speaking for myself alone, I cannot count how many times I have promised to never undertake another major project, and specifically to never open a restaurant, a business I just don’t have a lot of experience with. Fast forward to several months ago when I heard that the jewelry store next to my real estate office was closing down, and I found myself wondering what our future neighbor would be like. And whether I might be able to get a good cup of coffee from them. Initially, I considered expanding the real estate office, and then I decided that it would be a great challenge to start a new business that would be an exciting addition to the area, that would make the most of that great corner spot, and that would allow us to give something back to the community. And so, Lovebeans Coffeehouse – the restaurant I said I would never open – began to materialize. With it came the worry that I had bitten off more than I could chew, especially when combined with my 12-14 hour days in real estate. But alas, I love a good project, and nothing deters me once I have made up my mind.
