SPRING, TX -- While the Texas weather may still be sweltering hot, fall (sports) is officially here. August 6 marked the official start to the 2019 volleyball season for most teams across the state. Tuesday was also the beginning of a new era for the newest high school in the area.

Grand Oaks High School opened in 2018 and the volleyball team spent their first season playing an independent schedule. A year later, the Grizzlies are a member of District 20-5A and opened their first-ever varsity season at home against Cleveland HS.

Grand Oaks cruised to their first varsity win, beating the Indians in straight sets (25-9, 25-6, 25-13). It was clear early on that the Grizzlies were the superior team on the court Tuesday evening. Grand Oaks dominated every aspect of the game. The attack was relentless. At the net, it felt like the Grizzlies installed a brick wall on their side of the court. When the Indians did find opportunities to score, the Grand Oaks defense effortlessly covered all areas of the floor, picking up digs left and right.

The Grizzlies will look to take the momentum of their first varsity win into the weekend for their first tournament of the year, the Huffman Hargrave Tournament.

Day one of the 2019 volleyball season was also a successful one for the rest of the Woodlands/Conroe area schools. “Sweep” was Tuesday’s word of the day as all 6A CISD schools picked up wins in straight sets to start their season. The Woodlands swept Cinco Ranch (25-20, 25-21, 25-22), College Park swept Cy Ridge (25-20, 25-14, 25-10), Oak Ridge swept Summer Creek (25-10, 25-14, 25-17), and Conroe swept Caney Creek (25-18, 25-18, 25-22).

Just like Grand Oaks, these teams will be looking to use Tuesday’s wins as a boost to their performance this weekend at various tournaments around the city.
