HOUSTON, TX -- Each spring, the Houston Food Bank secures donations of water, cleaning supplies and ready-to-eat food to store in preparation for the year’s upcoming hurricane season. In the event of a hurricane impacting our area, HFB, with the help of our Partner network, will serve as a first-response organization, providing lifesaving and life-sustaining commodities to disaster survivors. We currently are working with 63 Partners who have pledged to make every effort to serve as disaster distribution sites, serving food and water after a disaster event. We will also serve those in need by working with Texas Gulf Coast Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD), local offices of Emergency Management, Texas Department of Emergency Management and Feeding Texas.

Preparation:

Extra warehouse space to handle receiving and distribution of product – Market Street, HFB-North Branch
Prepared for shelter/hotel response if asked by City/County/State (peanut butter, bread, tuna, snacks, can openers)
Trucks are loaded and staged for disaster response in multiple high-ground locations
63 partners who have committed to being disaster distribution sites
Committed to stay open to assist with disaster response
665 disaster pallets on standby – canned, shelf-stable items, 170 pallets of cleaning supplies, and more than 400 pallets of water
We are in Phase 2 “High Probability” of our COOP (Disaster Plan) with the next Phase being “Execution” should Hurricane Laura hit the Houston area.
