THE WOODLANDS, TX -- Dragon Swimming Hits The Pool As Dragon Winter Teams Continue Conference Play. Results from the week of January 11, 2021

1/16 at HAPPI (Houston Area Private and Parochial Invitational)

Girls 6th place • Boys 3rd place

Coach Sara Bany: Cooper swimmers were back in the water on Jan. 16 with the first championship meet of the season, the Houston Area Private and Parochial Invitational, known as the HAPPI City Championship meet. Cooper hosted 13 girls teams and 11 boys teams from around the Houston area at the University of Houston. The girls finished sixth overall and the boys finished third overall.

Leading our efforts in the pool, Caitlin Lanigan swept her events winning both the 50 Free with a season-best time of 24.90 and the 100 Free with another season-best time of 54.57. Other season-best times included Peyton Boone (17th in the 100 Free and 18th in the 200 Free), Victoria Davila (15th in the 100 Free), Katia Guerrero (15th in the 50 Free, 9th in the 100 Fly), Noelle Harris (19th in the 100 Free and 21st in the 100 Breast), Katie Kovin (15th in the 200 IM, 10th in the 500 Free) and Megan Werner (26th in the 50 Free, 18th in the 100 Free).

In the boys’ meet, Victor Guerrero and Henry Shea led the way, both winning an event. Guerrero won the 100 Fly with a time of 53.31 and came in third in the 200 Free with a time of 1:51.15. Shea won 100 Free with a season-best time of 50.38 and finished fourth in the 100 Back with another season-best time of 55.38. Zhi-Hahn See finished right behind Shea in the 100 Free with a time of 53.00 just beating the third-place swimmer by 0.03 of a second – a very exciting race to the finish! See also swam a best time in the 50 Free finishing in 4th place. Another top result was the 200 Free relay team of Guerrero, See, Zac Winton and Shea, who just beat out Kinkaid for the relay victory. Seniors Nicholas Harris and Winton finished the 50 Free 15th and 16th respectively, both posting best times this season. Winton also finished 10th in the 100 Free while Harris finished 15th in the 100 Breaststroke. Freshmen Alexander Harris, Grey Mendenhall and Kevin Werner also had season-best swims. A. Harris finished 13th in the 100 back and 16th in the 200 IM, Mendenhall finished 10th in the 200 Free and 9th in the 500 free, and Werner finished 11th in the 100 Fly and 15th in the 200 Free.

All in all, it was a great day of fast swims while we gear up for our last few meets of the season. We have a couple more weeks of hard work in the water before we see how fast our team will go this year, but the results from the HAPPI meet are encouraging and motivating!
