THE WOODLANDS, TX -- Results from the week of September 27, 2021

9/24 vs. Oakridge School* • 40-21 W

Your belief determines your action, and your action determines your results, but first you have to believe.

The Dragons believe, and their actions drove their results last night as they handily defeated the Owls of Oakridge 40-21. The weather moved out and the Dragons moved in firing on all cylinders both on offense and defense and took a 27-0 lead with them to the half. The Dragons slowed it down in the second half and bled the clock, still scoring on two of their three second-half possessions on drives of over 90 yards each. Junior QB Vaughn McKeever was strong again, throwing for 160 yards on 13 completions to five different receivers. His feet were the true show of the night as he ran for 63 yards and four touchdowns. Senior RB Jackson Pierce was back after missing last week and his return was very welcomed as he ran for 137 yards on 16 carries with one touchdown. The Dragon defense surprised no one with their high-quality play, harassing the Owl offense all night long. Junior LB Carson Berger was all over the field forcing Owl mistakes and totaling eight tackles. Senior LB Blake Pitts was full throttle as always, making plays in the backfield and in the secondary, forcing a fumble to end the only real threat from the Owls in the first half. The Dragons take their show back on the road next week as they head to Apogee Stadium to face off with the Cyclones of Casady School. by Coach Daniel Lewis

9/30 vs Kinkaid* • 3-0 W

Coach Jennifer Peyton: Two really big wins this week. 3-2 over Awty and 3-0 versus Kinkaid.

We came in and took care of games one and two at Awty but they brought the energy and fought back to tie the match at two. The Dragons fought off a couple of early runs by Awty in the fifth and were down 13-10 before rallying off the last five points to secure the victory. Lauren Wolford and Tatum Threadgill led with double-doubles. Wolford with 35 assists and 14 digs. Threadgill with 20 kills and 21 digs.

The Dragon serving really put Kinkaid out of system from the start. The team had a season-high 16 aces with 10 by Julianne Hon. Tatum Threadgill led the offense with 22 kills.

10/2 at Dayton Invitational

Girls 1st • Boys 3rd

In the wake of this week’s storms, the Cooper Cross Country teams traveled to Dayton High School to run on a muddy course. While battling the elements, both teams performed well to secure a first-place win by the girls and a third-place finish by the boys. “Today was about mental toughness and racing,” Head Coach George Dohner said. “With cross country being an outdoor sport and especially in Texas, we never know what conditions may present for any given course. Today wasn’t about time, it was about competing! I was proud of our kids. We had a few key runners miss today’s race for various reasons, which gave several runners the opportunity to step up.” The girls ran well, led once again by Megan Day and Milla Signorelli in second and third place. Amber Navarra and Abby Mendenhall finished in sixth and ninth place. Freshman Avery Boyd was Cooper’s fifth runner, finishing 22nd overall, in her very first 5K race.

The boys team was led once again by senior Vishnu Swaminathan’s first-place finish. Sophomore Gray Mendenhall also turned in a solid performance finishing in fourth place. “I was really happy with the boys’ performance today,” Dohner said. “With a couple of our top runners nursing injuries, a few kids really stepped up and ran well!” Elias Boles was Cooper’s third scoring runner finishing in 14th place. Morgan Davis and Kase Melodick rounded out the team scoring in 18th and 22nd place to help secure a third-place team finish.

“This was a great meet for us to gain some confidence as we move into our final three meets,” Dohner said. “We will compete against some tough SPC competitors at the St Johns meet at Spring Creek next weekend, then SPC South Zone in Austin, and finally in our Championship in November.”
