The Woodlands, TX Student Named a Top Young Scientist in the Nation

THE WOODLANDS, TX -- Sanjan Sarang, a 14-year-old STEM student from The Woodlands, Texas has been named one of the most promising middle school STEM students in the country. Sanjan is a TOP 30 FINALIST in the Broadcom MASTERS®, the nation’s premier Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) middle school competition.

The finalists will be competing for more than $100,000 in awards and participating in an in-person competition in Washington, DC.

About Sanjan Sarang:

• Project Title: Testing the Impact of Food Ingredients, Consumer Products and their Packaging on the Human Endocrine System

• Project Summary: Sanjan used computer models called QSARs to identify selected chemicals in foods and consumer products might bind with hormone receptors. The models use data about chemicals’ makeup and structure and can help identify other chemicals that may have similar effects.

Broadcom MASTERS, a program founded and produced by the Society for Science, encourages middle school students to translate their interests into a passion for STEM. This competition is part of a robust STEM pipeline that encourages students who show incredible promise to pursue STEM in high school, college and beyond.
