The Legal Fix | Episode 50 | Lawyers React to #DeppvHeard Verdict
The Legal Fix: Episode 50 - Depp v Heard. Lawyers recap the Depp-Heard Trial breakdown the verdict, the aftermath, the trial, the court, witnesses, evidence, attorneys. With special guest Courtland Pettigrew and Man on the Street, Special Correspondent, Taint Merchant.
VERDICT. 7 jurors reached a unanimous verdict, deliberating for 13 hours over 3 days, after a 6-week trial in Fairfax, VA. What question did the jury ask the judge to clarify during deliberations? What did the jury forget to write in the verdict?
JOHNNY. The jury awarded 15 million to Depp finding Amber's Tweet was "more than a mere republication" and made a "defamatory implication" with "actual malice." 10 million compensatory, 5 million punitive reduced to 350k by VA State Law. "...the goal of bringing this case was to reveal the truth, regardless of the outcome," Depp said. "I feel at peace knowing I have finally accomplished that."
AMBER. The jury awarded 2 million to Heard finding agency liability for Johnny and no Free Speech protection for his lawyer's statement. "I’m even more disappointed with what this verdict means for other women," Heard said. "It is a setback. It sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated. It sets back the idea that violence against women is to be taken seriously. Heard said she believes Depp’s “attorneys succeeded in getting the jury to overlook the key issue of Freedom of Speech and ignore evidence that was so conclusive that we won in the UK.”
Did you believe Johnny Depp or Amber Heard? What did you think of their reactions to the verdict? Who were the big winners and losers? Who won the battle of the lawyers? Who was a compelling witness, what was the most persuasive evidence?
